Some more detail and some pictures of this exhibition

An iconic match

The 1923 Cup Final is one of English footballs most iconic games.  It was the first game to be played at the new Empire Stadium in Wembley, London (now called Wembley Stadium).  In unprecedented scenes, over 200 thousand fans swarmed into a stadium designed to hold only 125 thousand.  The pitch was completely over-ran by spectators.

Cameras captured the image of a policeman on a white horse pushing back the crowds, and the match was named ‘The White Horse Final’. Bolton Wanderers won the cup for the first time in this match, and Alex Finney played at fullback.

Bolton's proud links with the FA cup

The shirt has been loaned to Bolton Museum from a private collector, and can be seen alongside other exciting objects in a special section of the exhibition that focuses on Bolton’s proud association with the F.A. Cup.  This includes film footage of the famous 1923 Cup Final, and an extract from an interview with a Bolton man who was actually there.

The exhibition runs until May 23rd.
