Calling Bolton photographers

The museum now has a Flickr account. As well as putting our own collection images on line we want to involve local photographers too.

If you have some interesting pictures of Bolton old or new then you might be interested in joining our online group.

Using a popular online photography sharing service called Flickr we want to create a forum where old images of the town can be viewed and compared with newer pictures taken by the public.

How to join

1: Sign up to the Flickr online service. The basic service is free though if you haven't got one already you will be directed to create a free Yahoo mail account first.

2: Upload your pictures. These should be:

  • of places in and around Bolton
  • any period up to the present - you can scan in old pictures if you have any
  • taken by anyone - you don't have to live in Bolton
  • recognisable - though you might need to tag your image with a street name to help identification
  • in focus!

3: Join the Building Bolton group. The group is moderated so it may take a short while for your pictures to appear there

About the group

The Building Bolton Group takes its name from a forthcoming exhibition opening on the 13th December 2008 which runs until the 28th February 2009.

The intention is to build on the group over time and continue beyond the end of the exhibition. So far a number of Flickr users have already joined and have shared some excellent images of the town.

Why Flickr?

Services like Flickr allow you to do interesting things with your information; for instance you can view all of the Building Bolton images on a map (including contributors). There is also a social aspect to the site that allows you to easily link up with people who have similar interests.

In time we hope it will be possible to include an interactive map on this site that will allow you to view different aspects of Bolton's history in an accessible way.

Powerhouse Museum Flickr/Google Street View mashup

The Powerhouse Museum in Australia has a large collection of photographs on the Flickr Commons. In this example the Powerhouse images have been combined with Google Street View to create a unique way to view historic photographs online:
