The Townhall

Image of the Townhall prior to the expansion of the building and the creation of Le Mans CrescentThe north of England was one of the first areas in the world to undergo industrialisation. Formerly sleepy small rural towns transformed themselves into hubs of industry.

The people that lived in these towns and cities had to invent how to live in the industrialised world.

Town councils built fine civic buildings like Bolton’s town hall and market hall, and competed with other industrial towns to have the finest buildings.

Community groups also got involved in building producing churches, chapels and Sunday schools. Wealthy individuals concerned about the welfare of the townspeople also sponsored the building of hospitals, orphanages, even museums.
